How to Paint Laminate Furniture?

It’s important to keep in mind the kind of paint you’ll be applying over the primer in order to choose the right one. Since I wanted the back panel of my bookshelves to match the wall color behind the furniture, I wanted to use the same latex paint that we used on the wall.

latex paint, which is water-based, is a great option for painting laminate furniture because it provides a smooth finish. We separated the back panels from the other parts of the bookshelves. We flattened several of the cardboard boxes to cover the floor and kitchen table instead of using a drop cloth after unpacking.

We were ready to apply the first coat of paint to the Billy Bookcase sections after allowing the primer to dry. The dark gray walls in our living room were painted with leftover latex paint. We could immediately see that the latex paint was adhering well to the primer. I always recommend applying two thin coats of paint. Most even finish will be given by this. It took less than half an hour for us to paint each section of the bookshelf dark gray.

We applied our second coat of paint a few hours later. Thanks to the base coat of primer, the paint looks great. All you have to do now is sand and prime it. I have not seen any peeling of the paint I painted over.

The finish should be sanded until all of the shine is gone. I used a primer + interior paint combo, but you can also start with something like Gripper from Home Depot. Any interior paint should work after that. Since the cabinet I painted doesn’t get much traffic, I didn’t bother finishing it with Polycrylic. I did some projects on top of a table that I ruined.

I’m anxious to hear what everyone has to say about this post because the poly I used made the table look splotchy. It’s a good idea to be careful when sanding. The scratches will show through your paint if you use too rough of a grit. It’s more accurate to say buff the laminate. Don’t over do it. The alcohol shellac primer is the best primer for glossy and smooth surfaces. You should get it in a spray can if it is a small area. If you want to blow the fumes out of the house, use a fan to blow the fumes out of the house.

It is ready for paint in less than an hour. The use of the paint is what determines it. If this is going to get a lot of abuse, you should use an oil based paint. It’s fine if it’s going to be mostly for show. The higher the paint’s gloss, the more abuse it will take. It’s best to get a smooth finish. Just like spraying a car, I would use an air compressor and cup gun. If you can’t do this, you can use a small hot dog roller.

Mohair will look great. It is better to do it in multiple coats than in one coat. Do you recommend using super fine paper when you say buff? Or something else? I use the green dish scourer pads when finishing cars. Is that a better option? I think you don’t need to pay much attention to deglossing if you are going to use the primer. The scratch pads are not as good as sand paper. Scuffing isn’t so good. If you notice scratches, go lighter. I would use the Pro-classic gloss for paint. The waterborne will cure the alkyd to be strong. Both of them have self levlers that look great. It won’t take much abuse for about two months if you choose the waterborne. It will take a couple of weeks to cure the alkyd.
